Automotive Window Tinting FAQ & Maintenance Guide
1. What is automotive window tinting?
Automotive window tinting is the application of a multi-layered optical film to the interior surface of a vehicle's glass windows. Modern window films provide high visual clarity while blocking heat-producing infrared energy and damaging UV radiation.
- Visible Light Transmission (VLT): The percentage of visible light passing through the window. Lower percentages indicate darker shades (e.g., 5% VLT for dark privacy tint vs. 70% VLT for virtually clear protection).
- Ultraviolet (UV) Rejection: The percentage of harmful UV-A and UV-B rays blocked by the film. Quality films block over 99% of UV radiation, protecting passenger skin and preventing cabin materials from cracking and fading.
- Infrared (IR) Rejection: The percentage of heat-producing infrared light energy rejected by the film.
- Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER): The comprehensive percentage of solar energy rejected across the entire solar spectrum (UV, visible light, and infrared radiation). TSER serves as the primary benchmark for real-world thermal efficiency.
2. How does window tinting protect my car?
- Cabin Heat Rejection: Keeps interior temperatures lower, reducing climate control strain and enhancing fuel/energy efficiency.
- Interior Preservation: Prevents sun damage, cracking, and fading across leather, vinyl, trim, and interior screens.
- Glare Reduction: Filters blinding sunlight and night headlight glare for improved driver visual comfort.
- Privacy & Safety: Enhances interior privacy and holds shattered glass fragments together in the event of an impact or break-in attempt.
3. How do I care and maintain window tint?
Immediate Post-Installation Care
- Windows: Keep all windows completely rolled up for at least 3 days. Rolling windows down prematurely risks catching film edges on door sweep seals, causing lifting or peeling.
- Curing Pockets: Do not touch temporary water pockets or hazy spots. Trapped moisture evaporates naturally through the porous polyester matrix during the curing phase (3–14 days).
Cleaning Instructions
- Cleaning Delay: Wait 14 days post-installation before cleaning interior glass surfaces.
- Safe Cleaning Products: Use soft microfiber towels and auto glass cleaner explicitly marked Ammonia-Free.
Long-Term Protection
- Seatbelts: Carefully guide seatbelt buckles back to their resting position when unbuckling to prevent metal strikes against interior window glass.
- Pets: Limit direct contact of sharp pet claws against interior film surfaces.
- Cargo Handling: Exercise caution when loading tall, sharp, or bulky cargo through cabin or hatchback doors.
4. What is the window tinting warranty?
Geoshield Limited Lifetime Warranty
Geoshield installations performed by authorized dealers cover the original owner against:
- Fading or purple discoloration
- Bubbling, blistering, or edge lifting
- Cracking, crazing, or delamination
- Chemical adhesive failure or bond separation
Note: Warranty coverage excludes physical abuse, seatbelt strike damage, glass breakage, commercial vehicle misuse, and chemical damage resulting from ammonia cleaner usage.
